Niantic Inc., the creator of the globally renowned augmented reality game Pokémon Go, is reportedly in advanced talks to sell its video game business to Scopely Inc., a mobile game developer owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF). Industry insiders suggest the deal could be worth around $3.5 billion and is expected to be finalized within the coming weeks.

Details of the Potential Acquisition

This major acquisition is likely to encompass not only the Pokémon Go franchise but also Niantic’s other mobile game ventures. Founded as a Google spinoff in 2015, Niantic achieved global fame with Pokémon Go, an augmented reality (AR) game that encouraged players to explore their surroundings by capturing virtual creatures integrated into real-world environments.

Despite its initial success, Niantic has struggled in recent years to recreate that level of global appeal. The company faced significant setbacks, including staff reductions and the cancellation of several anticipated projects. Notably, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, another high-profile AR game, was discontinued in 2022 due to underwhelming performance.

Who Owns Scopely?

Scopely Inc., the prospective buyer, was acquired by Savvy Games Group in 2022 for $4.9 billion. Savvy Games is a subsidiary of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which has been actively investing in the global gaming industry as part of Saudi Arabia’s broader strategy to diversify its economy beyond oil revenues. This strategic investment aligns with the kingdom’s Vision 2030 initiative, aimed at fostering a robust entertainment and digital economy.

Why This Acquisition Matters

If finalized, the acquisition would be a major milestone in Saudi Arabia’s growing footprint in the gaming industry. The deal would also position Scopely as a significant force in the mobile gaming market by adding a global hit like Pokémon Go to its portfolio.

In addition to its successful gaming ventures, Niantic has developed advanced tools for capturing and sharing 3D scans of real-world locations. These tools contribute to creating detailed geospatial models that integrate millions of scenes through machine learning technology. The acquisition could help Scopely leverage these technologies for future innovations in mobile gaming and augmented reality.

Niantic’s Legacy and Challenges

Under the leadership of John Hanke, Niantic’s CEO and founder, the company initially thrived by promoting interactive experiences that encouraged players to explore their neighborhoods. Hanke, a former Google executive who worked in satellite mapping, envisioned Pokémon Go as a way to blend the digital and physical worlds seamlessly.

However, Niantic’s attempt to replicate its early success has faced obstacles. Layoffs and project cancellations in 2022 and 2023 signaled a decline in the company’s growth trajectory. Despite this, Pokémon Go remains the most downloaded and profitable augmented reality game to date.

Expanding Niantic’s Global Reach

In August 2024, Niantic and Savvy Games announced a collaboration to expand the company’s presence in the Middle East, particularly in Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Egypt. This partnership was part of a broader initiative to diversify Saudi Arabia’s economy and increase investment in the gaming industry. If the acquisition proceeds, this existing partnership will likely strengthen Scopely’s efforts to establish a stronger foothold in the Middle Eastern market.

Implications for the Gaming Industry

The potential $3.5 billion acquisition represents more than just a business deal; it signals a shift in the global gaming landscape. As Saudi Arabia continues to invest heavily in the gaming sector, its influence on international markets is expected to grow.

For Niantic, this acquisition could offer the financial support needed to revitalize its development pipeline and explore new ventures beyond Pokémon Go. For Scopely, owning a globally recognized AR game could help the company achieve its goal of leading the mobile gaming market with genre-defining titles.
