A Small Chance of Collision

Astronomers are diligently tracking asteroid 2024 YR4, a recently discovered space rock with a small but non-negligible 2% chance of impacting Earth in 2032. While this probability is low, scientists emphasize the importance of ongoing observations to refine its trajectory and potentially eliminate the risk altogether. The asteroid, estimated to be between 40 and 90 meters (131 to 295 feet) wide, is comparable in size to a large building.

Regional Devastation Possible

Though smaller than the dinosaur-killing asteroid, 2024 YR4 could still cause significant regional devastation if it were to strike our planet. The asteroid was initially detected on December 27th by the ATLAS telescope in Chile, a key component of NASA’s near-Earth object (NEO) detection program.

Refining the Trajectory

Multiple observatories, including those in Hawaii, Chile, and New Mexico, have been employed to study the asteroid’s path. The James Webb Space Telescope is slated to provide more precise measurements in early March and May by analyzing its heat signature, which will further refine predictions of its orbit. Hawaiʻi’s telescopes play a crucial role in planetary defense, enabling accurate spotting, tracking, and study of asteroids.  

Understanding the Risks

Understanding the asteroid’s exact size is crucial for assessing potential impact risks. A larger asteroid within the estimated size range could produce blast damage up to 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the impact site. The asteroid’s high speed (approximately 17 kilometers per second, or 38,028 miles per hour) significantly contributes to the potential for damage.

Learning from History

Asteroids of this size impact Earth every few thousand years. The Tunguska event in 1908 and the Chelyabinsk meteor in 2013 serve as stark reminders of the potential consequences of such impacts. The European Space Agency (ESA) suggests that an impact from an asteroid in the 50-meter range could have effects similar to the Tunguska event.

Continued Monitoring is Key

Despite ongoing efforts, detecting asteroids like 2024 YR4 remains a challenge. Scientists estimate that only a small fraction of these near-Earth objects have been identified. Continuous monitoring of the sky is essential to identify potential threats and ensure planetary defense.
