OpenAI surprised its 3.9 million followers on X.com with a sudden livestream titled “Deep Research,” sparking widespread speculation.

When the stream went live, the company introduced its latest AI breakthrough—an agentic AI model designed to conduct multi-step research, analyze online content, synthesize information, and apply reasoning to complex topics. A key feature is its ability to ask clarifying questions to stay on track.

Deep Research launches today for ChatGPT Pro users, with Plus and Team users gaining access soon.

This development aligns with OpenAI’s previously leaked project “Strawberry,” formerly known as Q*, which reportedly focused on enhancing AI’s reasoning skills.

According to Reuters, OpenAI viewed Strawberry as a breakthrough in AI’s ability to conduct sophisticated research. However, the company has remained vague about its existence, only stating that research into new AI capabilities is ongoing.

Public reactions have been mixed—some X.com users joked about it, while others raised concerns about OpenAI’s transparency.

AI researchers, however, see it as a major advancement toward autonomous research agents capable of deep analysis and contextual understanding.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has emphasized the importance of reasoning in AI’s future, and with Deep Research now rolling out, the company is moving closer to its vision of AI-powered research assistants.

Whether this innovation marks a true breakthrough or just another experiment remains to be seen, but it’s a significant step in AI’s evolution.
