State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Governor Jameel Ahmed announced that new currency notes are awaiting cabinet approval, with the first release expected by the end of 2025. He shared this update during a press conference on Monday, where he also revealed the revised policy rate.
Ahmed explained that SBP is progressing with the issuance of new design currency notes, as previously announced. He mentioned that the first note could be released in the upcoming fiscal year.
He clarified that the process is lengthy, with a committee currently working on it. The design is under review, and cabinet approval is expected within two to three months.

The governor further stated that the issuance would take place in phases, although he did not disclose which denomination would be issued first. “The notes will be released gradually, and we are in the final stages of approval,” he said.
Additionally, Ahmed mentioned SBP’s efforts to introduce a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), noting that a bill to establish the legal framework for it is currently being reviewed by the federal government.
