Two Chinese companies have submitted an application for permits to export donkey bones and meat from Pakistan and India, indicating a brand new avenue for Pakistan’s market for exports.

The applications, which are currently being reviewed through Pakistani authorities, cover the two aspects of slaughterhouse setup permits as well as approval for exports. If the applications are approved, the businesses are allowed to process and export donkey products solely by Gwadar located in Balochistan. This restriction is designed to stop local distribution, and also ensures the processing as well as shipping are regulated under the federal export protocol.

Background and Enforcement Action

This incident follows the massive crackdown conducted by authorities from the Islamabad Food Authority (IFA) on the 27th of July when they were able to raid the illicit slaughterhouse at Tarnol. The authorities confiscated more than 1000 kilograms worth of donkey flesh and freed the more than 50 donkeys from the slaughterhouse. An international citizen was detained on the premises and an First Information Report (FIR) was filed.

The preliminary findings suggest that meats were processed for export, triggering more thorough investigations to discover possible supply chain and distribution points within the country.

Rising Donkey Population in Pakistan

According to the most recent data provided by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics according to the latest data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, the number of donkeys in Pakistan has risen by 109,000 over the last year which is now 6.047 millions. This increase suggests a growing interest in the potential of using donkey by-products to export particularly due to the increasing demand from East Asian markets.
