The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued an urgent warning about a growing fraud involving fake delivery messages. These fraudulent messages, which appear to be from courier companies, are circulated through messaging and SMS applications to trick people into divulging confidential verification numbers.
According to PTA, the fraudulent messages request users to input or share verification codes in an attempt to confirm delivery. Fraudsters later use these codes to gain logins to accounts on personal computers, mobile applications, and financial platforms. The authorities have clarified that any legitimate courier service requires these codes from its customers for tracking parcels or delivery.
The PTA emphasised that sharing verification codes, particularly those sent via messaging or text messages, can lead to serious consequences, including fraud, identity theft, unauthorised transactions, and financial loss.
Consumers are advised to be vigilant and avoid engaging with any unsavoury emails that ask for personal information and verification numbers. Instead, any suspicious communications must be reported immediately to PTA through its complaint channels.
In its advisory to the public, the PTA reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the privacy of digital customers in Pakistan by continuously checking, detecting, and blocking any fraudulent activity. The authority also advised users to confirm the authenticity of any unwelcome message, especially when it requests sensitive information, before making any decision.
