Chinese startup DeepSeek has gained significant attention with its new AI model, DeepSeek R1, which has surpassed ChatGPT to become the top app on Apple’s App Store in the United States.

The model, priced up to 95% lower than OpenAI’s offerings, has proven impressive in handling complex reasoning tasks. Developed for just $5.6 million, it’s a fraction of the typical costs tech giants spend on AI development.

Early feedback highlights the model’s effectiveness, with software developers praising its ability to generate efficient code. Users have also succeeded in tasks like web development and chess strategy.

DeepSeek R1 is particularly strong in mathematical problem-solving and coding challenges, according to benchmark tests. Additionally, the model can run on standard hardware, handling intricate tasks with ease.

Users on social media have demonstrated its capability to perform demanding computations on everyday consumer devices.

Liang Wenfeng, DeepSeek’s founder, emphasized that the company aims to democratize innovation. By offering free access to individuals and charging developers just $0.14 per million tokens, compared to OpenAI’s $7.5, the model has gained popularity.

DeepSeek’s success is even more impressive considering China’s limited access to U.S. semiconductor technology. The company managed to stockpile 10,000 Nvidia H100 chips, enabling continued development despite geopolitical challenges.
