Nasa has equipped Odysseus with six payloads, encompassing both technology demonstration and scientific investigation.

Among these, a crucial study will focus on lunar dust behavior, a persistent challenge encountered by Apollo astronauts due to its abrasive nature, which often interfered with and obstructed equipment functionality.

The agency’s scientists aim to gain insights into how landing craft disturb lunar dust, causing it to linger above the surface before resettling.

Included in the six commercial payloads is a student camera system from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, intended for deployment from Odysseus when it was approximately 30 meters above the lunar surface. This system was designed to capture images during the robot’s descent.

Additionally, American artist Jeff Koons has affixed a box to the lander’s side containing 125 small stainless steel balls representing the Moon’s phases throughout a month.

It’s worth noting that only a select few countries, including the state space programs of the Soviet Union, China, Japan, and some other countries have achieved successful lunar surface landings.
