In the past forty years, China has witnessed remarkable strides in food security, bolstered by reforms, technological advancements, and robust investment in agricultural infrastructure. Despite this progress, evolving demands for high-value and protein-rich products, coupled with climate-induced adversities, continue to pose significant challenges. Extreme weather events, dwindling land and water resources, an aging rural population, and pest outbreaks further compound these concerns.

To combat the impact of climate change on agriculture, China has taken substantial measures. These encompass fortifying irrigation systems, upgrading transportation and agricultural infrastructure, and championing research and technological innovations in climate-resilient crops. The implementation of a comprehensive insurance system for agricultural production has also been prioritized.

China’s transition towards sustainable agricultural practices is underscored by policies emphasizing capacity-building and responsible resource utilization. Initiatives like the ‘Action Plan for Zero-Growth in Fertilizer Use’ have yielded substantial reductions in the application of fertilizers and chemicals. As part of the 14th Five Year Plan, a campaign to augment domestic grain production by 50 million tonnes has been set in motion, complemented by policies aimed at enhancing farmers’ resilience to climate shifts.

Moreover, China is exploring diversification in food sources by increasing imports of feed grains and oil crops. While these measures bolster short-term resilience, their long-term implications on climate change mitigation remain uncertain. As China advances towards sustainable agriculture, practices like precision agriculture and vertical farming are set to revolutionize food production.

However, the collective effort towards a sustainable agro-ecological transition demands active private sector involvement and international cooperation. Collaborative endeavors in research, knowledge exchange, and sustainable practices, including the enforcement of carbon emission reduction schemes, are instrumental in securing a stable food supply for China’s burgeoning population. Though strides have been made, the journey towards food security and climate resilience in China’s agricultural landscape is an ongoing one.
