Move over, ChatGPT: AI startup Anthropic unveils new models that challenge Big Tech
Anthropic revealed that its top-performing model, Opus, outperformed other prominent AI systems, including OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Google’s Gemini 1.0 Ultra, across various standard tests measuring AI proficiency, such as undergraduate and graduate-level expert knowledge and reasoning.
Among the Claude 3 models, Sonnet and Haiku are considered less advanced compared to Opus. Opus and Sonnet are currently accessible in 159 countries, while Haiku remains unreleased.
Co-founder of Anthropic, Daniela Amodei, highlighted that Claude 3 exhibits improved risk management capabilities compared to its predecessor, Claude 2, which sometimes exhibited overly conservative behavior in responding to certain inquiries.
“In our pursuit of a highly safe model, Claude 2 would occasionally decline valid queries,” Amodei explained. “When confronted with more sensitive topics or trust and safety concerns, Claude 2 tended to err on the side of caution.”
Established in 2021 by former OpenAI staff, Anthropic has secured substantial venture capital funding, including investments from major tech giants like Amazon and Google. The company has emerged as a formidable competitor to leading AI technology firms striving for prominence in a rapidly expanding industry.
In contrast to previous versions, Claude 3 enables users to upload various documents, such as images, charts, and technical diagrams, for analysis by the models. However, the models are not equipped to generate images.
Enhanced Capabilities of Claude 3 Models
Anthropic announced in a press release that all Claude 3 models have demonstrated significant advancements in analysis and forecasting, nuanced content creation, code generation, and multilingual conversation abilities, including languages like Spanish, Japanese, and French.
Regarding specific models, the company noted that while Opus showcases markedly higher intelligence compared to Claude 2.1, it maintains a similar processing speed. Conversely, Sonnet exhibits twice the speed of its predecessor and surpasses it in intelligence, albeit falling short of Opus’s capabilities.
Furthermore, Anthropic highlighted that Claude 3 models will now provide citations to enable users to validate the accuracy of their responses, emphasizing the enhanced precision and improved contextual memory of the models.
However, in a technical white paper, Anthropic acknowledged two significant weaknesses in Claude 3: instances of hallucinations, particularly when interpreting visual data, and the failure to identify harmful imagery.
With the 2024 presidential election intensifying within a media environment susceptible to misinformation, Anthropic outlined in the paper its development of new policies regarding the political use of its tools. Additionally, the company is devising methods to evaluate how the models respond to prompts targeting election misinformation, bias, and other potential misuses.
Daniela Amodei emphasized to CNBC the imperfection inherent in any model, underscoring the company’s concerted efforts to balance capability and safety. She acknowledged that despite rigorous development, there may still be instances where the model generates erroneous information.
